Change the required response for custom question

Currently if you want a custom question to show up on the donation form, donors have to provide a response. We would like donors to have the option to leave that field blank.
Example:
We would like to have a custom question asking if a donor would like to designate their gift to a specific project/program, and if they leave it blank it will go to general support. We don't want this to be an obstacle for donors to move on to the next stage in checkout.
