We have had good luck with setting up a "VIP" ticket that is basically a duplicate of our main event ticket but with zero cost. Then we use that URL discreetly to add free tickets.

Yes to have everything in one place is absolutely crucial - people send in checks for their sponsorships all the time and I can't capture that on the event page or with the amount of seats I have left.
